Fantastic Five

This is a blog post that will explain 5 ideas I have for my set project in the theme of Ultimate Black. I do not want to keep myself really tied in the color black, because I do not want to just do the same of what I did last term. I do think that my work last term was interesting and I really dug deep in the meaning of the color but this time I want the color to be strictly a jumping point. I want to think outside the box and try things I have not tried before. I want to challenge myself to see where can I push myself and how I can redirect my thoughts to approach a color differently than I did last term.

My first idea is the one I came up with in my ideas generation post. I really like the idea of raising awareness of mental health and focusing on the demons that escape human's body at night when they are their true selfs. About this idea I have created the Tell Me A Story post where I mentioned the outline of the story and some images illustrating it. I feel a really deep connection with this theme and I feel like this may be a reason this project would come out really well. I think when the artist has a connection and strong feelings towards the work, it naturally comes out more expressive and brings more attention to itself.

My second idea came from me thinking about the sky being black and when I was thinking of the sky I thought about heaven and religion. I am a religious person and the Bible is definitely something that interests me. I thought about what comes down from heaven and what came to mind are the Fallen Angels. There is not much understanding of the Fallen Angels among people because it is not a topic that is discussed often. I was thinking of animating the story that created demons using the Bible as the reference and the black color as a base to create the darkness. I think this is a very interesting idea and it may be something very out of the box, however there is a reason why I will not create this animation. I am a religious person and I go by a phrase, not to touch something that's bad. I believe that demons are real and this is why I am not going to get close to them.

My next idea came from the fact that in the past movies were only black and white, so something black and white now is often understood as history. I was thinking of showing an event in history that is not that well-known, but it should be recognized. I have not thought exactly of an event that would fit this perfectly, but I was thinking of a really dark event, by that I mean something bad that has happened in the past that is not mentioned often or nearly at all. This is something I would need to research. The animation would be pretty much like a history lesson, where an event would be illustrated and explained.

The next idea I had was connected to the Black Lives Matter movement. We live in times where the racism needs to be fought. Artists have a way of showing their support towards something through their art therefore for me an animation would be a way to show that I support Black Lives Matter. I could for example create a short animation that explains why saying All Lives Matter is ridiculous in the given times and why Black Lives Matter is an important movement.

The last idea is just a simple outline of an idea. I was thinking of a Black Hole and how it and the Galaxy in general is something I can't get my mind around. These things are just so complex in my head that I struggle understanding the concept. I think I could educate myself about those and create an animation where I would explain those concepts in the simplest way possible. The idea does not sound too appealing to me, so I am probably not going to go with it.

I personally feel the strongest connection to the idea of creating an animation on mental health and normalizing not being okay. I think this is a very important matter that needs to be talked about.

  1. There is a real enthusiasm for this project theme, outlined here in these ideas. The mental health awareness is really important, you could even talk about the use of social media and look at how so many people want to believe conspiracies over the facts, something that we are suffering with a lot at the moment - have a look at something called 'Cognitive Dissonance' and the 'Dunning-Kruger effect' the latter being a hypothetical idea that applies to populist theories and movements.
