Cartoon logo - research
I decided to do a little cartoon logo research to familiarize myself with already existing logos and to get some inspiration for my own logo.
Every cartoon has some sort of typography that is a title that is usually shown at the very beginning or the end of the cartoon. I could not have mine without one, therefore I needed to look at some other works to see what I really want to have incorporated and how not to make it too complex or too simple. I want my typography to be able to compete with all those logos out there and look as professional as the ones existing. I personally do not have much experience in creating logos or typographies so it was a completely new area for me.
I started by looking at a classic logo, that I think is really good.
The Adventure Time logo is very recognizable because it really is one of a kind. I think the typography is so successful because it is in a font that is a little bit rusty and medieval and there also is a sword. I really like the sword as an outside element that in my opinion really makes the logo. It kind of shows that the show will be about some sort of adventures involving a sword, possibly some battles or fights. I like how it is possible to get a lot of information or to even just think about the show just from the logo. I think it is an indicator that it is indeed a good logo. I also really like how the sword is a part of the letter "E", it really shows the smart design of the particular piece and that it was highly thought through.
Another logo I decided to look at is not as successful in my opinion.
This logo is not as successful in my opinion. I think it is generally too simple. Personally, I have watched Ed, Edd n Eddy a lot growing up and I wish this logo would make me go back in time and just simply remember how I would wake up early just to watch the show on Cartoon Network. This design tells me nothing about the cartoon. I do like the font and that it is childlike, but I think it is missing something. It is missing maybe an element that would give me an idea of what the show is really about or some sort of background that would really stick in my mind. I think now when I am noticing the lack of those elements I will be able to recognize if I am doing the right thing when developing my own logo. I do like how the words are not laid out in a straight line. It makes me think that it is for children and it is so at least there is some sort of thinking process going on in my head while looking at this logo.
Another logo I decided to look at is from the show called 'Winx Club'.
This logo is very recognizable. I like the color of it that indicates that the show is about girls. I like that the logo is drawn so it looks as if it was 3D or made out of a material that is convex. What I also like it the letter "X", so generally the title 'Winx' is an indicator to the word 'Wings' because the show is about fairies who have wings. The letter 'X' in my opinion looks a little bit like a pair of wings. Generally the logo looks a little bit magical and the dot above the letter 'i' and some other elements of the design look like a magic dust which fits the idea of the cartoon really well. I think a lot of children can easily recognize the logo and it does bring back many memories for them. I like how there are elements indicating the plot of the show incorporated in the design. I think it is a very successful design.
The next show whose logo I decided to look at is the show called "Codename: Kids Next Door".
I think this logo loos interesting, however it does not make me think of the show when I see it. It just does not bring back memories, I feel like maybe it was not showed enough in the show or was shown for just a very quick second that it did not find a place in my brain. I think the idea behind the design is really good. There are the characters incorporated and it gives me an idea that there could be like a club possibly named 'KND' and the kids there have some sort of inventions maybe. I am getting that because one of the character is holding something that looks like a laser gun. I can see that the club consists of boys or mostly boys, but I could be wrong about it because I can only see the outlines of the characters. I like that the logo has a red outline, it gives me a sense that it could possibly be a sticker or that it is some sort of warning as if it was something dangerous. I think it is an interesting design and I could definitely get some ideas from that.
In this research I looked at four logos, some very successful and some not so much. I think this research helped me realize what elements are the most important and how I see if a design is successful or not. I What I have learned is that incorporating an outside element is usually a good thing because it helps to establish what the show could possibly be about. I have also realized that I personally like when the typography has some sort of background to it because then it is easier to remember. I was thinking about what sort of object I could somehow incorporate and it came to my mind to involve a crown because it would indicate that there is some sort of royalty, maybe a royal family. I was thinking of also creating a background for the letters but I am still not set on that, I will have to do a lot of drafts before I am set on one design.
