adding background to the drawing - son

For the son's background, I wanted to keep with the idea of keeping the kids in their bedrooms because that says a lot and I want my characters and the show in general to be inclusive and show how normal and relatable they are. I decided to put the main character int a little bit different room than the rest and make it more challenging for myself. I decided to put him into a long room, so there would be actual depth behind the character.

I started this process by creating a point of origin that would help me make the lines on which I was going to base the furniture and the walls and generally the entire depth of the room. I have of course done that with the opacity of the character lowered down so I could see what is behind him but still get a sense of his size and everything.

This is how I started the process and I think it was challenging for me to imagine how this is laid out and how to place the furniture so it looks normal and like an actual child's room. I decided not to make the room extremely big - like a prince would have because I wanted this room to be relatable. Not every child has a big bedroom. The bedrooms are often cramped and there is not too much space. I decided to put a desk, a wardrobe, a bed and a toy box in the back so it looks fairly 'normal'.

Once again I was not outlining the objects but simply using the Plume Studio brush and a bucket fill tool to make the process quicker.

When adding color to the furniture I kept in mind experimentation with color and working with complementary colors and making sure all the colors work well together as a whole so it looks like an actual room of a child, not some staged room.
I put so much stress on the actual working with color part of the process because this whole project is based on color and I make sure it is still highly incorporated in the project work.

This is the room I have created. I personally think that it is a really normal, childlike room and that it is harmonious coloristically and look relatable. I also really like how I approached the depth and even though it was a little bit challenging, I overcame all the obstacles on the way.
