adding a background to the drawing - daughter

In this post I will explain my work process of adding a background to my drawing for the daughter.

The first thing I had to think about was where I want to put her to make sure this reflects her personality best. I decided to put her in her room, because teen's room is often very highly reflecting on the teenager themselves. It is their space, that they can decorate and make it whatever they like and this is why I think putting a very strong personality in her room would only add to who she is as a person.

Firstly I added a new layer and created a basic sketch of what I want the room to look like. I have also changed the opacity of the character so I could imagine the background more.

This was my basic idea for the room, but later after a more in-depth analysis I decided to get rid of the writing on the poster and stay just with the symbol, thinking about that I want my designs to be understandable to people all over the world - not just English speaking. For example if this cartoon was ever translated, the design would stay the same and it would create confusion because not everyone would understand the writing.

I have also decided not to outline any of the background elements, for the same reasons I did not outline any in the mom and dad designs. I decided the curtains would be the same colors they are in the mom's studio because I wanted to keep it clear that it is in the same castle. It goes exactly the same with the floor, however on this floor I decided to add a rug, so it looks more cozy and like a teenager room.

I did not struggle with adding color, I was once again using the brush called Plume Studio and I was using the bucket paint fill. I decided to specify that the light source is coming from the window because in my head this room is somewhere really high in the castle, it is why there is no view from the window unlike the view from mom's studio. If the light source is from the window then the character leaves a shade in front of herself.

I have created the shades by simply drawing the shades by using a darker tone of the color I decided to color the rug. I think the shades turned out very well.

Here is the finished design of the daughter - Donna in her teenage room. I am very happy with this design and I think it looks very good. It definitely reflects on the character and their features. I like that the background is simple and it does not take too much attention from the character themselves.
