First Thoughts

Today in class we looked at project brief and talked about the three themes that we can choose from regarding our projects.

The theme I am drawn to the most is "Purple Haze". I think I could do a lot of research considering this color, see what it represents in literature, what it represents in different cultures or in the Bible. There are many directions I could go in with this theme that I am still yet to discover and I think that is really interesting and me choosing this theme could have a great outcome in my project.

My progression route is animation and it is important that whatever I choose to do is strictly connected to my route. What I need to create for my project are six 2D pieces that I could present in a gallery on my website. I am mostly interested in character animation, therefore I think creating 6 characters would be a good idea.

There already are many characters in the color purple, however I have never thought whether the color is there only for the aesthetic reasons or does it carry a meaning.

I have found a very interesting research article on the colors of anger, where the researchers mention how different cultures approach different colors. This article is definitely something for me to read when doing a more in-depth research.

There are some cultures that connect purple with very negative emotions, therefore it would make a lot of sense that Winnie the Pooh's heffalumps are colored purple, since they were seen as scary.

Purple can also be seen as a color representing sensivity and a great example of a sensitive character that is indeed purple is Chowder from a cartoon of the same name.

Chowder (n.d.)

I have never thought about this character being colored this way, because of his personality and I believe that it is a very interesting approach to create characters.

It is important to remember that purple is a color created by mixing red and blue. Red - the color of anger  and passion and blue - the color of calmness and sadness. I think it is a very interesting way to see this color, it is why I believe that it can be seen as both, positive and negative since it is a very neutral color. It all really depends on the shade of it. When the purple is created by adding a lot more red than blue, the color is going to appear more vibrant and more angry. When there is a lot more blue, the color becomes more calm and neutral. I think experimenting with different shades of purple might be very interesting when creating characters, because that can help me create emotion I am going for.
