Sequential images: Planning

I did my initial research on sequential images and after that I knew I wanted to do black and white pictures. I also noticed, that I like static pictures more, than I do dynamic images. Knowing that, I started to think of what I want to tell or what message I want my sequence to carry. I decided to tell a story, considering I highly enjoyed "The Fallen Angel" sequence by Duane Michals, and that was a storytelling series.

I started looking for an inspiration in everyday life and everything that is happening. It is fall right now, and that means the flu season is starting and people are getting ill. Personally, I have also had a cold, therefore I thought that it would be a good idea to portray overcoming an illness. I made a list of things people do when they have a cold, and that's: staying warm, drinking water with lemon and honey and taking medicine. I wanted my pictures to be calm and static, I did not want almost any movement of the people in the pictures.

I created a sketch of my sequence.

This is a rough draft of my pictures, that I have created. I wanted eight pictures, divided into two rows: four pictures in the top row and four pictures in the bottom row. I colored the hands (when visible) in blue and red to distinguish sides of the person. I decided that in 7 first pictures, I want the people to be covered in blankets to show that they are ill. I knew these pictures would not be easy to take, considering the fact that I want them to be static, almost none movement and I had to be both taking them and being in them. I knew that would be a big challenge I had to find a way to overcome.

Then it was time to take the pictures.

The pictures were taken with an IPhone 11 pro with a wide-angle camera.

I was very pleased with how the pictures turned out, however there was still editing to do. I knew I had to crop the pictures, so the countertop would be a straight line and I wanted to crop out the shade on the left and the thermostat on the right. I also wanted to make the pictures black and white and increase the contrast. I thought it would look good to add blur on some of the pictures to stress objects I think are the most important in the particular shots.

The edited pictures and the finished product will be displayed in the next post.

  1. The images are well planned - what you needed to do here was get closer 2/3 of the images is background and space - the viewer need to to see close up and your faces and this will improve these. Also you need to add technical details - what camera/phone did you use, which settings did you use? How did you edit these or will edit these?
