Project development: Class exercise

In this post I will present what I created for the class exercise where we were supposed to work on one of the sketches we did yesterday and work more on it. I decided to play with color. I generally really like experimenting with color because I see color as extremely important in animation. Color palette can make people fall in love with a character if the colors are chosen correctly, or they can really make the character not very pleasing. I like to work with color hands-on, not only digitally, therefore I took this opportunity to paint with watercolors and really see how the colors are behaving. I decided to create 5 paintings of one pose I created yesterday. I wanted to observe the color and really try with it.

Each of the painting I decided to use different colors for the dress and the hair. I decided to make them fairly similar, so for example if I was making the dress green, I would make the hair different shade of the same color of a very similar color.

This exercise helped me to see how the character would work in different colors and which colors would feel the best. I personally like the pink/red the most because they give this character a lot of power and simply happiness. I want the character to seem happy. I want people to feel this is a happy character. I think that this is why I will go with these colors.

Also this exercise let me play with the watercolor paint, it was a good opportunity for me to practice that and improve my skills.

  1. These are almost like different moods, each colour potentially describing what is happening in terms of the mood of the character, so more than just an exercise in using watercolour and greater in terms of creating a potential for changing the mood/personality of the character from one scene to the next.
