Creating my logo design

I started by creating a few drafts of different ideas I had in my mind for the logo. I wanted the font to be hand-drawn, not done in a computer, because I wanted it to look childlike, like the logo for 'Ed, Edd n Eddie' that I looked at. I think things drawn by hand have those imperfections that make the design interesting.

I sketched out some ideas in my sketchbook and here are the results:

My first thought was a very cloud like image. I thought about balloons and clouds when creating it, but to be honest I really did not like the final logo. It looks messy and not professional at all. I know when I digitalize a design it does look better, but I really was not sure about this one so I decided to try a new design, a completely new idea.
This logo came out even worse than the last one. I really tried to make the Winx approach here and my thought was to make the design a little bit 3D. I thought about the crystals and how royal they are. I was trying to incorporate a design of how a crystal look like, but I think the typography just did not work well at all. It looks messy and the letters are too childlike. I wanted them a little bit messy but what I sketched out here was an extreme. I did not like that, so I moved on to the next idea.
The next design is better than the two previous ones. I like that I actually incorporated the crown design and the letters are simpler but I feel like this design is missing something. It is not exactly what I had in mind, but I think this is the first sketch that put me on the right track. There was a balance between the complexity and the simplicity of the design and it id simply not messy as the other two were. I think this unlocked a whole new level for me where I understood the design I want to achieve more. I tried to create another sketch, but keeping in mind, what I liked about this one and what direction I should go.
For this next sketch, I have used the similar letters I did in the previous one because I thought I liked them, but looking at it for some longer time, I thought there is nothing special about them that would make people remember this logo. I like the idea of putting the logo in an oval shape so it looks like a batch or a stamp and once again I have incorporated the design of a crown, but this time I tried putting it on a letter, which I personally liked a lot.

After analyzing what I did, I decided to create one more, final draft. This time I really knew what I wanted and what I wanted it to look like.
I generally loved the idea of a stamp or a wax stamp, so like a seal. That was my main idea for the background of the logo. It reminded me of royalty and people who are rich and in power. I also knew I wanted something special about the font so it would really stick with a person.

This is the idea I decided to be the final one. This is just a rough sketch, but I had in mind, what tools to use to make this logo look as what I had in mind. I was generally happy with the sketch I have created, but knew there was a lot of work for me to get done in Procreate.

I started the process my copying the image to the software and coloring the letters from the word 'amethyst' white. I colored each letter on a separate layer and used the brusk called Plume Studio for the coloring process.

Because I was working with each letter on a separate layer, I did not have to worry about overlapping letters, because that problem I knew I was going to solve when just putting the layers in the order I want them to be. The letter 'A' would be in front of the other letters, the letter 'm' would be behind it and so on. That was going to be achieved when I put the letter 'A' on top of all the other layers.

The next step, was adding the color to the letters. As visible in the sketch, I wanted the letters to be have a very thin filling inside and that would be achieved with the color purple. Making sure this is all in the right place was easier because I was using separate layers.

As presented in the picture above, if I was drawing on the layer with the letter 'e', everything I was drawing was immediately placed behind the letter 'm' and that helped me not to create mistakes caused by the confusion of the order of the letters.

When I have created all of the letters, I duplicated each of the layers, Alpha locked all the duplicated layers and filled all of the new layers with color black.

This is how the process was going. Alpha Lock tool locks everything that is drawn in a particular layer and the 'fill layer' option (when Alpha lock is turned on) lets me color everything that is in the layer in a particular color that I have chosen, for example in this case I have chosen black.

When all the layers were done the way I wanted them to be, I have selected all the layers in black and moved them a little bit to create the aspect of depth in this design.

This is what I achieved by creating all those layers. It creates the kind of depth so accurately, that I would not be able to draw those shades by hand. I think I did a good job using different options of the software I am using, not just the simple drawing tool that is a very straight forward tool.

Next step was outlining the word 'planet' At first I wanted it in one color, but when I saw how it turned out, I decided to continue with the idea I had for the first word. I like how I completely changed the font so the image would not look boring or monothematic.

When working on those letters, I also used the layers and the tools such as Alpha lock or fill layer. I just did not explain it step by step here, because I have already done that with the previous word.

I have also added the background. I decided the background to be a very dark shade of purple. I drew an oval shape and held my apple pencil down so the shape would not be wobbly but very smooth. This is another option in Procreate that I like to use when I need my design to be very clear. When I was happy with the oval shape, I copied it and pasted it but in an even darker shade of purple. I made it bigger so it would look like an outline of the stamp. The last step in creating the background was to create wobbly waves around the edges, so it would look like the leftover wax used for the seal.

At the very last I drew the crown in a yellow - golden color so it would really indicate that it is worn by kings and queens.

This is the final design and I am very happy with it. It looks presentable and professional and I think it can stick in someone's mind for a long time. I can see it being an actual logo for a cartoon. I like that the letters have some depth to themselves and I like that there is an outside element involved - a crown. I also think it is really good that the logo has a purpose, by which it is a seal, so I could see how at the beginning of the show the logo could be presented by showing the movement of someone sealing an envelope with this stamp. It could possibly be an indicator that the letters are being sent to the Earth because the characters would like to communicate with the Earth. I think this logo is opening so many possibilities for interpretation and that is something I really like.
