Sequential images: Class task

During our first Digital Arts class, we worked on creating sequential images and making them into a collage.

During class we looked at different sequential images from different photographers. I was mostly inspired by "Jumping a hurdle, black horse" photographed by Eadweard Muybridge.

"These images, made possible by a series of cameras with an automatic release, created a great stir in Europe and the United States" (Musee d'Orsay; https://www.musee-orsay.fr/en/collections/works-in-focus/photography/commentaire_id/jumping-a-hurdle-black-horse-11272.html?cHash=be2573e2c5
I like that this sequence shows the movement exactly frame by frame; therefore, if the pictures were shown very fast one by one, it would create motion. I also wanted to use the idea of showing sport movement that would look as if it was frame by frame.

What we did first was come up with an idea and sketch our images on a storyboard.

My idea shown on the storyboard was a sequence of pictures of my flatmate doing a cartwheel. While sketching I used blue color to mark right arm/leg and red color to mark left arm/leg. In my opinion, using colors to distinguish left and right sides of the human body makes it easier not to get confused later. It probably would not make that big of a difference in this project, since it was not complicated, but I am trying to make that a habit of mine.
Then it was time to take the pictures.

After taking the pictures I encountered an obstacle; there were two different lines in the picture that I could base my horizon on: the ground and the windows. My problem was that when I set the horizon line to the ground, the windows were visibly tilted and vice versa. It looked odd and I was not sure how to deal with the problem at first. After some experimenting, I decided to crop the windows out of the pictures, so I would have only one horizon line.

After cropping all the pictures, I used the Be Funky software to put the pictures together in a collage and used Fotor Editor software to add the title to the collage. I decided to use Fotor, because in that editor I could pick the font color from the pictures by using the pipette color picker.

Finished product:

I am really happy with how the project turned out. I like the background a lot because orange contrasts very well with green. I am glad it is an orange brick, not a darker shade that would go more towards red, because then the contrast would be even stronger, and I believe if the contrast was even a little more visible, it would take attention from the girl who is supposed to be in the foreground.

  1. Really good first go at these - nicely done, nicely planned and considered. Please add research from the sequential images that you looked at in class as well.
